There are seven species of this endemic lava lizards
in the Galapagos.
Almost all of the Islands have at least one species living there, all but Genovesa, Wolf and Darwin. All lizards vary in color, shape and
behavior. Lizards living on darker lava as opposed to lighter lava are
darker in color. There is also an obvious distinction between the female
and male lizard in that the female has a red or orange neck which can be
seen in the picture of the female lava lizard below. Note the
difference between this lava lizard from Santa Cruz and the lizard from
Isabela below. Some lizards can grow to be 30 cm in length.
