Endemic: the Galapagos marine iguana is
the only swimming iguana in the world. There are 7 marine iguana
subspecies found in the Galapagos and you can find them on most of the
Islands. Though it is mostly the larger, stronger males that are found
swimming and fishing, they can be submerged normally for 5 to 10 minutes but
if needed can submerge themselves up to 60 minutes. They also
generally submerge in shallow water they have been known to dive up to 12
meters. Because of what they eat and diving, they fill up with salt.
To get rid of the salt they will be seen 'spitting.'
